Venice is located on some 118 small islands separated by canals and canals is what made this city most famous in the world. The buildings of Venice are built on the wooden piles reaching into the hard layers of compressed clay. The wood in water does not decays as quickly as on the surface. Also the wood comes from trees known for their resitence to water. 

The Republic of Venice was a major maritime power from the 13th century till the end of 17th century and made Venice a very wealthy city.

The whole city is listed as the UNESCO World Heritage site.
