In 1215 the Genoese built a fortress on the site of present day Monaco. The current ruling Grimaldi family first seized temporary control in 1297, and once more in 1331, but were not able to lastingly secure their holding until 1419. Economic  progress was spurred in 19th century with a railway linkup to France and the opening of a casino. Since then, the principality's mild climate, great scenery, and gambling  possibilitis have made Monaco world famous as a tourist and recreation center.

Monaco is the second smallest country by size, only larger from Vatican.

It has four districts: Monaco Ville-  the official capital of the Principality of Monaco, is a small district on top of the Rock; Monte Carlo - the residential and resort area with the Monte Carlo Casino; La Condamine- the south western part which includes the port area; Fontvielle - new industrial area built on ground reclaimed from the sea.

In addition to its Monte Carlo Casino, Monaco is famous for its car races - the Monte Carlo Rally and the Monaco Grand Prix.
