After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Italy transferred into a system of city-states. This system lasted thru the Renaissance and started to weak with rise of modern states in Europe.

Italy  became the area  of proxy fights between the major powers such as Austria and France.

Reunification of Italy  was largely  works of Camillo Cavour, prime minister of the Italian state of Sardinia  and was completed in 1871. 

tItaly became a republic after a referendum held on 2 June 1946. This day is celebrated now as the Republic Day.
