Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom) was built by the Byzantine Emperor in the 6th century to be the largest church in the world of that time. It remained so until construction of Seville Cathedral.

The church was converted into a mosque in 1453 after the city of Constantinopole, today’s Instanbul was conquered by the Ottomans.

In 1936, Hagia Sophia was converted into a museum by the order of Ataturk. Visitors admire its interiors decorated by the beautiful Byzantine mosaics.
