Germany is the second most populous nation (after Russia)  and the biggest economy in Europe. The  European powers competition immersed Germany in two destructive World Wars in the first half of the 20th century, left the country occupied by the winning Allied forces of the US, France, UK and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the arrival of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany and the eastern German Democratic Republic. The democratic Federal Republic embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EU, and NATO, as the Communist state was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The downfall of the USSR and the end of the Cold War enabled for German unification in 1990. Hence, Germany has invested large funds to bring Eastern capability and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced the Euro, a common European exchange currency.
