The bridge remained the only connection between two sides of the river, called the Old Town side and the Lesser Quarter side, till the middle of 19th century. The initial names of the bridge were the Stone Bridge and the Prague Bridge. The bridge has a row of some 30 statues, mostly in the baroque style, coming from the very beginning of 18th century but now replaced with replicas.
