Big  Ben is the common name used for the Elizabeth Tower, part of the Palace of Westminter. The name Big Ben also means the 14-tonne bell of the tower's clock , Ben being the nickname of Sir Benjamin Hall, the Chief Commissioner of Works during installation of the clock in 1858.

The clock dials of Great Britain’s largest clock are around 23 feet in diameter and the minute hand is 14 feet long.

The world-famous melody of the chimes, which ring every 15 minutes, is by Georg Friedrich Handel composer and comes from an aria in the Messiah oratorio (1742). It also played in Handel’s German city of birth, Halle (Saale), by the bells of the clock in the Red Tower.
